God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (Gospod postoi, imeto i' e Petrunija)
Part of the European Perspectives Strand
In a small Macedonian town, a single unemployed woman, Petrunya (Zorica Nusheva), incurs the wrath of her patriarchal community by defying convention and participating in a traditionally all-male Epiphany ceremony. With an astonishing debut performance from Nusheva, this memorable satirical drama from writer-director Teona Strugar Mitevska was inspired by actual events that took place in 2014 in Štip, North Macedonia. God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya premiered in competition at the 69th Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. [12A]
