Danny Boyle is one of Britain’s most successful directors. His body of work may well be varied, but – as he has pointed out – his projects share a central theme of people overcoming impossible odds. Born in Lancashire in 1956, Boyle was successful in television and theatre before making his first film, the Edinburgh-set Shallow Grave, in 1994. This led to the adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel Trainspotting, which almost single-handedly revitalised the British film industry. Since then, Boyle’s filmography has been exciting, challenging and successful, and includes such classics as The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), 127 Hours (2010), T2 Trainspotting (2017) and, most recently, Yesterday. In addition, he was the artistic director for the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in London. [12A]
