The Red Phallus
Part of the World Perspectives Strand
An evocative and beautifully mounted film, The Red Phallus is a striking debut from Bhutanese director Tashi Gyeltshen. His debut film may sport a startling title, but its story centres on schoolgirl Sangay (Tshering Euden), caught in a society dominated by repressive men. Key among them is her sculptor father, who makes a modest living carving phallic totems and is furious Sangay is having an affair with an older married man. Bhutan’s stunning landscapes are a poetic backdrop to this memorable story about tradition, as a young woman decides to fight back. [15]
The Red Phallus is nominated for the 2019 Award for Best International Feature Film.
