Scheme Birds
Part of the Documentaries Strand
This compassionate and engrossing hybrid documentary tells the real-life story of teenage ‘scheme bird’ Gemma. Gemma never wants to leave Motherwell, where she relishes life with her jailbird boyfriend, Pat, despite the fact her grandfather disapproves of him. Strong-willed Gemma is such a character that Scheme Birds occasionally feels like a drama-doc, and its fly-on-the-wall style is always astute and empathetic as Gemma’s life twists unexpectedly. Scheme Birds is beautifully made with a real sense of heart. [15]
Scheme Birds is nominated for the 2019 Award for Best Documentary Feature Film.
