Underdown
Part of the Documentaries Strand
Underdown is an engaging and moving documentary about three fascinating characters living below the poverty line in Beirut. This is a powerful reflection on the effect of decades of wars, inflation and the refugee crisis in neighbouring Syria. Abu Hussam, a Palestinian taxi driver works, sleeps and drinks in his car, making light of his broken heart. 11-year-old Syrian refugee Ali lives alone on the streets of the city, grieving the loss of his friend. Lebanese Samya lives with her family, caring for her mother who is losing her sight. [15]
Underdown is nominated for the 2019 Award for Best Documentary Feature Film.
