EIFF presents an examination of the life and work of The The frontman Matt Johnson, including the UK Premiere of documentary The Inertia Variations.

Edinburgh International Film Festival is pleased to present a timely examination of the life and work of Matt Johnson, the uncompromising frontman of The The.

The rarely screened, groundbreaking visual accompaniment to the band’s seminal 1986 album of the same name, The The: Infected (1987) will screen alongside the UK Premiere of Johanna St Michaels’ The Intertia Variations (2017). This documentary focuses on Johnson’s life and work, and contains a performance of his latest work, brand new The The single, We Can't Stop What's Coming. There will also be a chance to see Radio Cineola: The Inertia Variations, an interactive exhibition based on the film. The exhibition will be staged at Summerhall from 22 – 28 June 2017.

It’s a family affair for the Johnsons with Matt’s brother, director Gerard Johnson, set to return to EIFF to direct a stage reading of John Hopkins’ controversial 1968 play, The Story of Yours. Looking back at his dark vision of Britain today, Gerard’s first two features Tony (2009) and Hyena (2014) will also screen as part of the programme.

These screenings and events will form part of the Festival's 2017 Retrospective Programme, full details of which will be announced next week.
