As an unusual and exciting alternative to the standard heart-warming Christmas fare, this year EIFF presents Dark Xmas at Filmhouse, a special programme of rarely screened cinema classics for the festive season.
Dark Xmas begins this Friday (15 December) at 8pm with the gloriously twisted Christmas dream Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick's stunning and divisive final film, set during the glittering celebrations of the upper class Manhattan socialites. Starring Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, the film is a visually stunning dive into the sexual underworld of the rich and powerful.
Next up, we have Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's stylish and surreal The City of Lost Children on Wednesday 20 December at 8.40pm. Full of the Delicatessen and Amélie director's trademark visual flair, this is a uniquely macabre Christmas fairytale.
Finally, on Christmas Eve Eve (Saturday 23 December) at 8.15pm, there's Black Christmas, Bob Clark's richly delirious cult nightmare from 1974, where a group of unsuspecting sorority girls are stalked by a stranger during their holiday. As the film's tagline goes, "If this movie doesn't make your skin crawl... it's on too tight!"
