Sign up for a 15 minute focused meeting with Health and Safety Advisor Mairi Ritchie to get professional advice and discuss your projects.

Mairi is a H&S Advisor based in Scotland. With 21 years of experience in the industry and a background in drama and film production, she is ideally placed to advise on the high-risk activities we encounter while creating the exciting and visually impactful content required. Mairi has been a H&S Advisor for the last 6 years, mainly large-scale drama and film productions, recent and notable including; Outlaw King, Calibre, Tell it to the Bees,The Cry, Victoria, Shetland, Trust Me and of course,Outlander. Every production brings something new. In order for us to make the content that keeps people watching we have to take risks; its just about putting measures in place to reduce the risk to an acceptable level, where we know everyone will go home safely after wrap.

Animators Seize the Seat

Access: Anyone can attend, however EIFF would like to apologise that due to the nature of this activity it would not be suitable for attendees with restricted movement, although Summerhall has provision for disabled access.

A much-loved EIFF tradition, the Animators Walk to the top of Edinburgh’s Arthur’s Seat not only offers an informal and active opportunity to get to know animators participating in the Festival, but also gives you the chance to catch the most breath-taking views of the city. The walk, which is dependent on the weather, is suitable for all fitness levels and should take no longer than two hours.

The walk ends at Royal Dick Bar in Summerhall around 12:30/13:00 where you can also join the group (lunch not included). Many local animators have studios in Summerhall.

If you would like to participate, please congregate from 10:30 for an 11:00 start at Holyrood Palace Car Park (situated within Holyrood Park at the side of Holyrood Palace on Queen’s Drive). Our Animation Programmer Iain Gardner will be leading the group over the Seat.

Why do some of us love to be scared by the films we watch, whilst some of us hide behind the sofa. What happens to our minds and our bodies when we feel scared or tense, and why does it affect us even though we know it’s all just on the screen?

This discussion will welcome horror and thriller writers to talk with biomedical researchers about writing for genre and how and why creating films that make audiences jump can be a leap to success.

Panellists include Horror Novelist and Film Critic Anne Billson; Writer/Director Greg Hemphill (Long Night at Blackstone); Writer/Director Aislinn Clarke (The Devil's Doorway) and University of Edinburgh Neuroscientist Gilliard Lach.
