The Informer with Live Musical Accompaniment

Part of the Unlocking the Archives Strand

Body

A screening of the BFI National Archive restoration of Arthur Robison’s The Informer with live musical accompaniment from Will Pickvance. This is a rare silent adaptation of Liam O’Flaherty’s famous novel, set among Dublin revolutionaries in the early days of the newly independent Irish Free State, formed in 1922.

In 1929, a group of Edinburgh cinephiles, inspired by the formation of film societies in London and Glasgow, decided that Edinburgh, too, should have a film society. From this inspiration was born, in 1930, the Guild’s first ever season in the long-vanished Prince’s Cinema, inaugurating the oldest continuously running film society in the world. From this vision, the Guild was instrumental in setting up the first EIFF in 1947 and played a significant role in the founding of Filmhouse. This rare screening of The Informer marks the legacy of EFG and celebrates the forthcoming 90th season of the Edinburgh Film Guild. [PG]

‘One of the finest films produced in a British studio in the 1920s.’
– Bryony Dixon, 100 Silent Films
