An exquisite docudrama, composed from the experiences of pregnant women in a Ukrainian prison where they live with their children in the early years. We follow Leysa, pregnant and newly arrived on a seven-year sentence, and the guard Iryna who takes an interest in Leysa and her child. Mixing absurdism and social humour – Iryna’s conversations with her own domineering mother, the guards painting their heels with nail polish to mimic Louboutins – with questions of maternity, rehabilitation and regret, this is striking anti-carceral cinema.
