Mark Cousins’ films - The First Movie, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, What is This Film Called Love?, Life May Be, A Story of Children and Film, Atomic, I am Belfast, 6 Desires, Here be Dragons, Stockholm, My Love – are about childhood, cities, recovery, walking, and cinema. They have won the Prix Italia, a Peabody, The Stanley Kubrick Award and other prizes, and have been shown in Cannes, Berlin, Telluride, MoMA in New York, and in cinemas around the world.

His books include Imagining Reality: The Faber Book of Documentary, Watching Real People Elsewhere and the forthcoming The Story of Looking.  He writes for Sight & Sound and Filmkrant, is an Honorary Professor at Glasgow University, and does playful film events, including several with Tilda Swinton. His next projects are a film on Orson Welles and a 22-hour documentary whose working title is How to Make a Movie: An Eye Opener.
