Tilda Swinton: Credit Brigitte Lacombe

Tilda Swinton is Scottish, read Social and Political Science at Cambridge University and started making films with the English experimental director Derek Jarman in 1985. They made seven films together before Mr. Jarman’s death in 1994. She gained wide international recognition in 1992 with her portrayal of Orlando, the film based on the novel by Virginia Woolf directed by Sally Potter.

Over the past thirty years, she has established rewarding ongoing filmmaking relationships with colleagues around the globe, including Jim Jarmusch, Lynne Ramsay, Wes Anderson, Erick Zonca, the Coen brothers, Luca Guadagnino, Bong Joon Ho, as well as many others: Bela Tarr, Spike Jonze, Judd Apatow and Terry Gilliam amongst them. She won an Oscar in 2008. 

Last year, Tilda presented The Seasons in Quincy: four portraits of John Berger, an essay film which she co-wrote, co-produced and co-directed with The Derek Jarman Lab.

She is the mother of twins and lives in the Scottish Highlands.
